Commenting on the passing of Motion 21 at the Annual Conference of the National Education Union, Kevin Courtney, Joint General Secretary of the National Education Union, said:

“Our society has experienced more than ten years of austerity, which has had devastating effects on the lives of children and their families. In these conditions problems of mental health have grown more acute, while the demands placed on the school system serve to worsen the crisis.

“The NEU will continue to campaign for increased levels of funding, free and healthy school meals for primary-aged children, and changes to our high-stakes and deeply damaging system of assessment.”
