The link between Government tests and school accountability unnecessarily raises the stakes and pressure on educators and pupils.
The NEU wants to see an assessment system that supports children's learning and gives meaningful information to school staff and to parents. Our present system does not do this. The Government must take a fresh look at the system and make it clear that there will be change.
The union is working with the Independent Commission on Assessment in Primary Education and More Than A Score campaign against the present system of primary tests.
