Speaking about the Education Minister’s announcement for an extra INSET day to remain for schools in Wales, David Evans, Wales Secretary for the National Education Union Cymru, said:

“NEU Cymru members will be pleased to see that the Minister has recognised the amount of pressure the workforce is under. These are incredibly difficult times, with the expectations around the new curriculum only adding to workload and other pressures. This extra INSET day will be welcomed by members, as they will need extra time to focus on planning for the new curriculum and working with others in their schools and locally.

“Extra INSET days to support the new curriculum were hard fought for by the unions, to support the workforce to plan for their learners. But the pandemic has meant these extra days have been taken up by everyone trying to adapt to a rapidly changing situation over the last two years – with professional learning to support the online learning, and with putting in covid measures in schools. I think many members will want to see the Minister go further, but this is certainly a welcome step. “
