Disabled employees have a right in law to reasonable adjustments but in too many cases these adjustments get treated as a luxury. Funding cuts are drastically undermining the accessibility of workplaces. If work isn't accessible, disabled staff can't keep their jobs, and this expertise is lost.

“Many teachers will be affected by health issues such as cancer, mobility issues or mental health conditions during their careers. Making work flexible and accessible helps disabled teachers, but also benefits all staff and boosts teacher retention.

“Attempts to reduce disability discrimination are made ever harder by austerity and cuts to public and health services.

“The NEU disabled members network is encouraging all members to identify to the Union as disabled, for both individual and collective support. Disabled members in the NEU provide support to each other, and the NEU is intent on tackling the isolation that disabled workers can face.”
