David Evans, Wales Secretary of the National Education Union Cymru, said:

“We welcome the Education Minister’s announcement to close schools from Friday. We are pleased that Wales is the first UK nation to take this practical and pragmatic approach.

“We also welcome the focus being on the most vulnerable. We know that many children and families in Wales are reliant on schools for their free school meals and enables parents to work. These are unprecedented times. How we act now to protect young people with additional needs, especially those on the most vulnerable list, is going to be critical.

“As we move forward, we hope to have clear advice to share with our members as more information becomes available.  We know that many of them will want to play their part in supporting their workplaces and communities in the coming weeks, but ensuring the safety of our members, children and young people here in Wales is going to be vitally important.

“We know that Local Authorities here in Wales are already hard hit – and hope that the UK Government can step up to ensure that these crucial public services get the resources they need at this key time.”
