Speaking ahead of the Education Minister’s announcement to invest in 900 extra education professionals, David Evans, Wales Secretary for the National Education Union Cymru said:
"NEU Cymru welcomes an increase to the workforce. We believe that supply staff and those new to the profession will welcome the opportunity to provide extra support for those pupils who need it at this challenging time.
"We also welcome the investment and training package, to ensure the workforce is prepared to support children and young people over the next year. People work with children because they want to make a difference and see them reach their potential, and we look forward to working with the Welsh Government on this.
"We do believe that if more children were to be welcomed back to school we will need more staff and to make use of public buildings, such as libraries, to ensure greater capacity, and focus on everyone’s wellbeing. This would allow education professionals who are shielding or vulnerable to support learners at home, whilst keeping safe – and avoiding pressure on our precious NHS resources.”
