Welcome to teaching

We are delighted you have chosen to join the profession. Teaching is a great job. As a teacher, you can change children’s lives. However you train to teach, you can rely on the National Education Union (NEU) to support you throughout your training, induction and career.

This guide is aimed at anyone working towards QTS (Qualified Teacher Status), whether you’re on a school-based route or at university. We explore your time in the classroom, what you can expect and how to prepare. Find out more about the continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities and other support that the National Education Union can offer you as well as your rights and responsibilities in the classroom and the wider workplace.

While you are on the way to gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), your membership of the NEU is free. Your free student membership entitles you to all the benefits the union has to offer including CPD, our free AdviceLine, Educate magazine, as well as support and representation in the workplace.

When you qualify to teach you will be able to upgrade to full membership for just £1 for your first year as a teacher.
