More Than a Score survey on SATs

This clearly shows how the current assessment system in primary schools puts pressure on children and staff and doesn’t provide reliable or useful data.

Commenting on a Teacher Tapp survey of primary school leaders commissioned by More Than a Score, Daniel Kebede, General Secretary of the National Education Union, said:

"This new research lays bare the problems with the current assessment system in primary schools. School leaders have repeated their concerns that they put pressure on children and staff and don’t provide reliable or useful data.

"Parents, educators and children want an education system that is supportive, engaging and inclusive. Our excessive testing regime in primary does not enable this.

"We hope that the curriculum and assessment review takes note of this invaluable research and moves the Government towards an assessment system that supports children's learning and gives meaningful information to school staff and to parents. Our present system does not do this."
