Early career teachers

Though the aims of the Early Career Framework (ECF) are positive, it is not it working for schools or teachers.

Commenting on the passing of Motion 16 at the Annual Conference of the National Education Union, Dr Mary Bousted, Joint General Secretary of the National Education Union, said:

"Our members are clear that whilst the aims of the Early Career Framework (ECF) are positive, the practicalities of it for schools and teachers are not working. Schools need and want more flexibility, with the requisite funding, to make it work in their contexts, for their teachers and communities. They do not want the rigid, off-the-shelf programmes implemented by the Department for Education (DfE).

"Mentors and early career teachers need additionally funded time in the school day to fulfil the ECF programme effectively. The NEU will continue to engage with the DfE on training and early career issues in order to support new recruits to the profession; it is imperative they are supported to flourish and stay in the profession and are not put off by unnecessary or burdensome tasks."
