Trauma-informed practice and approach

A toolkit with resources and information that focuses on understanding trauma’s impact, supporting affected students, and creating inclusive, safe environments in education settings.

Trauma-informed practice in education focuses on understanding trauma’s impact, supporting affected students, and creating inclusive, safe environments.

Trauma-informed approaches to managing behaviour start by asking 'What has happened to you?' rather than 'What have you done?'. The resources in this Trauma-informed toolkit outline the reasons why this approach is so essential to addressing the issues of behaviour that challenges, as well as the increases in violent assaults on school staff, very often support staff.

For further information about what it means to adopt trauma-informed approaches use the Little Book of Trauma-Informed and the short What is Trauma-informed practice briefing. For getting started in your school the Model for Whole School development provides useful checklists and the Trauma-informed Development Plan gives you a template for your own audit and planning.
