Commenting on the passing of Motion 38 at NEU Annual Conference in Brighton, Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said:
“We reaffirm the union’s commitment to peace and international solidarity and call for the necessary investment in public services.
“There is continued underinvestment in Britain’s public services. education, health, local government, and the green transition. The majority of schools remain funded below 2010 levels.
“The growing pressure on European governments, to significantly increase defence spending, including proposals for military expenditure of up to 5 per cent of GDP in the UK, should not be used as a reason to divert resources away from public services.
“The significant international challenges, including the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and severe restrictions on humanitarian aid, is putting access to education under threat. This is robbing young people of a stable future.
“The NEU is committed to solidarity and co-operation with education unions globally, including Iran, as it enables workers to defend labour rights and their democratic freedoms. Solidarity can also grow campaigns on the global teacher shortage and help us press for the better treatment and safety of teachers around the world.”
