Select Committee says RAAC crisis only the tip of the iceberg for neglected school estate

Published:

Commenting on the Education Select Committee’s report Foundations of Learning: replacing RAAC and securing school buildings, published today (1), Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union said:

“We support the conclusions and recommendations of this report. It recognises that progress has been made in removing RAAC but that the RAAC crisis did not emerge in isolation and is only the tip of the iceberg for our ageing and neglected school estate.

“The NEU would strongly welcome the creation of a national digital register of asbestos in the education estate.  This was recommended for all public buildings in an April 2022 report and work should now begin on this register without further delay. (2) We also agree with the recommendation for funding to prioritise schools beyond their design life, including system-built schools - which after all present the greatest safety risks in relation to asbestos.”
