Commenting on the passing of motion 25 at Annual Conference in Harrogate, Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said:
"The NEU has reaffirmed its commitment today to challenge racism and call out all those who try to stoke hate, division, and violence.
"As educators, we are resolute in our determination that racism has no place in our schools or on our streets. We owe it to this and future generations of children and young people to make a stand and fight for their right to grow up in a society free of racism, anti-semitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of hatred and prejudice. Our education system has a vital role to play in teaching young people the virtues of tolerance, compassion and solidarity.
"The far right are always quick to scapegoat migrants but they habitually fail to say that public services in this country would grind to a halt without the expertise and skills of workers born outside the UK. It is incumbent on the Government to deliver the change that the British people voted for last year. Were they to think that more austerity is the answer - and if they fail to take bold action on reducing poverty and inequality - they will be creating the breeding ground for the far right to try and foster division in our communities."
