Children’s Commissioner report on the ‘Dickensian levels’ of poverty endured by children

Published:

Commenting on the latest report from the Children’s Commissioner on the harrowing levels of child poverty children are living in, Daniel Kebede, General Secretary of the National Education Union, said;

“The Children’s Commissioner’s report on children’s experiences of poverty is harrowing. It cannot be right that in one of the wealthiest countries on Earth, in 2025, children are having to go to bed to be chewed on by rats.

“It cannot be fair that, instead of learning games with friends, children are having to learn the intricacies of the welfare system with their families.

“It cannot be fair that children have to learn what it means to be poor, and grow up with an understanding that they are trapped by poverty.

“We support the Children’s Commissioner’s primary recommendation to the government: it must immediately scrap the two-child limit and benefit cap, and uplift benefits so that our most vulnerable can enjoy decent lives.
