Every pupil in Wales should have access to the support they need. We are pleased to see that ALN funding is clearly a priority for this supplementary budget.
Our members are clear that the current ALN system is broken, it requires serious reform and significant and sustained investment.
When surveyed, 86% of members in Wales said more funding needs to be given to children with ALN to ensure they get the support they need.
Commenting on the announcements that additional ALN funding would be allocated, Nicola Fitzpatrick, Wales Secretary for the National Education Union Cymru said:
“ALN investment in schools needs a serious review and overhaul.
“We welcome the additional funding that Plaid Cymru have announced for ALN but based on the evidence we have from our members over the last couple of years, this doesn’t go far enough and clearly more money needs to be spent.
“I have listened to the view that a short-term injection of cash will not solve longer-term systemic issues. I couldn’t agree more, which is why it needs both a significant amount of budget allocation now followed by a considered review of future funding sustainability.
“NEU Cymru look forward to working with the Welsh Government moving forward to ensure that our members' concerns are heard and addressed.”
