Summary
- We set out below the supplementary written evidence from the National Education Union (NEU) to the School Teachers’ Review Body (STRB). The NEU’s supplementary evidence focuses on the Government’s evidence to the STRB including the publication on teacher pay and progression, and on the Treasury’s Economic Evidence to Pay Review Bodies collectively. We also respond to some issues raised by other statutory consultees.
- As part of our supplementary evidence, we attach a full report of the latest annual NEU Pay and Progression Survey. Critical emerging headline findings from the Survey were set out in our evidence of December and are confirmed by the final report. The overwhelming number of respondents feel underpaid and have considered leaving due to low pay or the unfairness of PRP. Teachers were more likely to be denied progression if they were older, Black, part-time or in primary. Most teachers with TLRs said the payment was too low, and many not in receipt of a TLR said they should be getting one given their responsibilities. These and a range of other issues are set out in the final report of the NEU Survey, which with some 24,000 responses remains a major piece of evidence.
