Reading for pleasure: sharing the experience together

Reading is often viewed as a solo activity- a description of individual engagement. Yet children's reading can never be separated from their engagement with others – including family, friends, peers, teachers and librarians- all of whom influence children's interests and identities as readers in different ways. So in this session, drawing on the evidence base, Teresa will explore the social nature of reading and the pleasure and potential in children and adults’ sharing the experience together.

Learning objectives:

  • To expand delegates’ understanding of the social dimensions of reading
  • To share a social reading for pleasure pedagogy
  • To offer practical ways forward for primary classrooms.

Suitable for: members working in primary settings.
