Formal postal ballot for strike action

The national executive has decided that a formal ballot of teacher  and support staff members will open on 3 October and close on 15 December

Reports indicate that any pay rise for teachers will be below inflation and not fully funded.

The 3.3 per cent increase announced for school support staff is also well below the claim submitted by sister unions and unfunded.

This lack of funding will force heads into making even more cuts. The only way to improve things is if we work together, stand up collectively and show this government we won't sit back while our schools are starved of the funds they need.

If the government does not take urgent action to save education, we must act. So, we are asking you to get ready:

  • Make sure all your contact details are up to date by visiting MyNEU.
  • Talk to your colleagues at school and make sure they have saved the date.
  • Get in touch with your NEU rep or branch secretary and find out more.

The government must step up and deliver the properly funded education system our children and young people deserve. Read the key issues in this campaign

Ballots show high support for strike action

Teachers and support staff in state-maintained schools in England voted in parallel online indicative ballots on action over funding, pay and workload.

A total of 96 per cent of teachers voted to reject the government's proposal for an unfunded 6.5 per cent pay rise spread over three years.

90.5 per cent of teachers and 86.1 per cent of support staff said they were willing to take strike action to win sufficient funding for schools, secure above-inflation pay increases, reduce workload and prevent redundancies.

More than 150,000 NEU members voted in the indicative ballots.

School Teachers’ Review Body (STRB) in England for the 2026 pay award

Bridget Phillipson has had the School Teachers' Review Body (STRB) report covering crucial teacher pay and workload issues in England on her desk since February.  Despite her commitment to publishing STRB reports more promptly than in previous years, the report remained unpublished at the time of writing.  The NEU calls for the immediate publication of the STRB report.

With sister unions, we had written to the Education Secretary. The joint union statement set out the clear priority for the Government – invest properly in our education service to reverse the huge real terms pay cuts.

An NEU pay claim and a separate joint statement have been submitted to the School Teachers’ Review Body (STRB) in England as evidence.
