Having issues at work?

  • If you are experiencing work-related issues, contact your workplace representative. If there is no representative in your workplace, consider electing one.
  • Please also check the adviceline FAQ and advice pages to see if your issue is covered.
  • For queries about existing issues being handled by an NEU caseworker, please contact your caseworker directly. The AdviceLine cannot cross-advise on existing casework.

Unfortunately, the NEU cannot offer representation or assistance, including advice, for problems that existed before joining the NEU.

How to contact adviceline:

The AdviceLine is an employment rights advice service staffed by professional and experienced advisers. We want to ensure we give the appropriate time to every enquiry we receive. This means that you may have to wait. To ensure you get the most from your time we would recommend the following before you contact us:

  1. Your NEU membership number.
  2. Type of workplace you work at (e.g., maintained school, academy, independent).
  3. Relevant documents such as a copy of your contract and workplace policies.
  4. A brief timeline of the main events related to your enquiry.
  5. Any steps already taken to resolve the issue and the employer’s response to this
  6. Specific questions you want answered
  7. Something to take notes with
  8. Any relevant workplace policies
  9. Any important future dates (e.g. meetings, deadlines)
  10. Whether you work in an academy or other non-Local Authority school, establishing if you are employed under national conditions (i.e. The School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document and the Burgundy Book)
