Starmer on online safety

Commenting on the Prime Minister’s speech, Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said:

"The government is right to recognise the growing harm that excessive screen time and unrestricted social media use can have on children and young people. It is unquestionably wrong that Big Tech are allowing children to send and receive explicit images on their platforms.

"Guidance on screen time usage for parents is very welcome, but the responsibility for keeping children safe online cannot rest solely on parents’ shoulders. Today's announcements show that the Government understands the harms. The question now is whether it is willing to take the next step and act decisively to protect children from them. Now is the time to raise the age of social media access to 16."
