Refugee Solidarity. Schools should be safe for all

Commenting on the passing of motion 23 at Annual Conference in Brighton, Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said:

"Schools are the heart of the community for all children, including refugee children for whom the classroom is a place of security, stability, and belonging. Children and families seeking refuge from violence, conflict, and natural disasters deserve compassion, not hostility. The myth that refugees and migrants are to blame for economic hardship must be exposed for what it is, racist and false.

I’m proud of the NEU’s work to support refugees, both in the UK and overseas, including joint work with the International Rescue Committee and British Red Cross.

The NEU is calling on the Government to uphold the right to seek asylum, create safe and legal routes, and challenge misinformation, while ensuring schools are supported to provide safe, inclusive environments for all.”
