Commenting on the passing of Motion 24 at NEU Annual Conference in Brighton, Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said:
"Conference agreed the need to make all schools aware of the need to support trans and non-binary rights, and to encourage schools to treat trans and non-binary people with dignity and with respect.
"Conference agreed the need to call on the government to engage with the trans and non-binary community and to rebuild their rights.
"In relation to the Department for Education consultation Keeping children safe in education, Conference believes there is a need for the DfE to be clear that being trans and non-binary is not inherently a safeguarding risk and that schools must always work in the best interests of the child. Conference highlighted that the reality is that trans and non-binary people can regularly face abuse from family members.
“The NEU will work tirelessly to ensure that every trans and non-binary worker and young person is afforded the dignity and respect that they deserve.”
