Opposing the new Ofsted framework

Commenting on the passing of Motion 8 at NEU Annual Conference in Brighton, Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said:

"Ofsted causes more harm than good, and we need urgent and fundamental reform. In England, school inspection is disproportionately burdensome, causing damage to the health and wellbeing of our educators. Inspection outcomes are often inconsistent and disproportionately penalise schools that educate our most disadvantaged students. Ofsted have claimed that their new inspection framework will work to rectify these issues, but educators tell us that the experience and outcomes of inspection remain the same – untenable workloads and profound damage to mental health and wellbeing.

"The NEU’s position is clear: we need fundamental reform to school inspection and a system that is supportive, effective and fair. As we campaign for change, we will continue to protect our members from the harms of the new inspection framework through our Ofsted risk assessment.
