Commenting on the passing of Motion 21 at NEU Annual Conference in Brighton, Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said:
"NEU conference has today expressed its deep concern about the erosion of the right to peaceful protest in the UK.
"The right to protest is fundamental to trade unions and the wider movement. Unions stand in the proud tradition of protest and dissent in this country and they will not be cowed by attempts to curtail hard won freedoms.
"Successive governments have attacked our freedom to peacefully protest.
"In the last year we have seen charges brought against the organisers of peaceful protests in support of Palestine. These charges are an attack on our right to protest and should be dropped.
"The freedoms to organise, of assembly and of speech matter; and the NEU will defend them."
