We unequivocally condemn the military strikes on Iran that have killed hundreds of civilians, including more than one hundred children - many of them girls at school. The loss of young lives in this way is indefensible. No political objective can justify the killing of children or the devastation of communities.
These attacks form part of a continuing pattern of actions by the USA and Israel that contravene international humanitarian law. We call on the UK Government to oppose such actions, to press for de-escalation, and to uphold international law.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Iran - with those who seek justice, dignity and democratic rights and in complete opposition to external military intervention.
For many years, the NEU has condemned Iran's denial of trade union rights. We have spoken out against the repression of women and girls. We have consistently campaigned against the wider human rights abuses inflicted on the Iranian people.
Our position is rooted in principle. Change must come from within. It must reflect the will of the Iranian people themselves. It cannot be imposed by external military force, nor can foreign powers determine Iran’s future. Lasting freedom is built by people, not delivered by bombs.
