NEU statement on closure of Defence for Children International- Palestine

Published:

The National Education Union (NEU) is deeply concerned to learn of the closure of Defence for Children International- Palestine (DCIP) after 35 years of vital work defending the human rights of Palestinian children.

DCIP has been an essential and trusted organisation in amplifying the voices and experiences of children living under occupation and its work has played a crucial role in raising international awareness and holding the Israeli authorities to account.

The NEU has worked alongside the DCIP to highlight the treatment of Palestinian children in the Israeli military detention system. Through educational initiatives and advocacy, DCIP’s evidence and expertise have been invaluable in informing and mobilising educators and trade unionists across the UK.

We condemn the conditions that have led to DCIP being forced to cease operations. The loss of such a respected organisation represents a significant setback for the protection of children’s rights and for those working to ensure accountability for violations of international law.

At a time of ongoing humanitarian crisis, the widespread destruction of education in Gaza, and the ongoing attacks on schools, educators and students in the West Bank, the need for independent monitoring, advocacy, and protection of children’s rights is more vital than ever.  We call on the international community to ensure that this work continues, and that the rights, safety, and dignity of Palestinian children are upheld.

The NEU will continue to stand in solidarity with Palestinian children, educators, and our sister education unions.
