Israel’s airstrikes against Iran risk igniting an all-out regional war
The NEU is deeply concerned by reports of the extensive military airstrikes by Israel on Iran overnight. This attack on Iran is an incredibly dangerous and reckless escalation that will further inflame tensions in the Middle East and risks igniting a catastrophic wider regional conflict.
Reports from Iran suggest that hundreds of civilians, including children, have been killed in the strikes.
We join the human rights groups and governments from across the world that have condemned Israel’s attacks as a likely violation of the United Nations Charter and international law.
We urge the UK Government to condemn Israel’s attacks on Iran, uphold international law and make clear that it will not become involved in this dangerous escalation.
After being enabled by governments like the UK to act with total impunity in Gaza and the West Bank for far too long, Israel is now escalating its aggression into the wider Middle East and risks dragging the rest of the world into war.
The UK must stop all arms sales and military cooperation with Israel to ensure it isn’t facilitating these military actions in Gaza and beyond.
The UK must do all it can to de-escalate this crisis and work towards peace in the Middle East. This requires a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, accountability for all violations of international law and an immediate cessation of airstrikes on Iran.
