This checklist will assist reps in seeking a supportive workplace for women experiencing gynaecological conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis and fibroids, and in challenging the barriers they face. This is a collective issue and we believe that collaboration between workplace reps, health and safety reps, leaders, governors and a staff support network can go a long way towards creating a supportive environment for women experiencing the symptoms of endometriosis, adenomyosis and fibroids in the workplace, whether diagnosed or not.
A supportive working culture and environment for women with gynaecological conditions will benefit all staff. A collective approach is recommended, but there will of course be times when a member needs individual support.
- do senior staff and managers in the workplace understand the impact of the symptoms of chronic menstrual health conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis and fibroids on women workers? (signpost to relevant websites for further information)
- is there a policy or practice/protocol in place to allow any staff member needing to use the toilet/washroom during lessons to do so?
- are suitable facilities and arrangements in place for staff to discreetly change their clothes if necessary?
- is there a private and safe space workers can go to when they are experiencing pain or severe symptoms?
- do you have a disability leave policy in place in your school/college?
- are staff encouraged to complete a reasonable adjustments disability passport for use in the workplace so that they do not have to continually repeat their reasons for requiring adjustments?
- is paid time off for medical appointments allowed, as well as sickness/disability leave?
- do your health and safety risk assessments include risks relating to women’s gynaecological health and set out appropriate preventative measures?
- do senior leaders have an open-door policy for staff to discuss their access needs and to request reasonable adjustments?
- has any staff training been offered to better understand the impact of endometriosis, adenomyosis and fibroids on both staff and students, for example during exams or toilet passes for class?
- is support in place for staff members living with chronic pain from these or other conditions, recognising the mental health impact that this can have?
- encourage members to set up a workplace (or district) support group for women who have endometriosis, adenomyosis and fibroids
