The wonderful world of manipulatives – supporting learners of all ages in maths

This engaging and practical session will explore the effective use of manipulatives to deepen pupils’ mathematical understanding.  

Participants will develop their knowledge of how manipulatives support working and long-term memory, strengthen connections between concrete experiences, pictorial representations, symbolic notation and mathematical language, and contribute to a systematic, mastery-focused approach to learning. 

We'll talk about additive reasoning including number bonds, multiplicative reasoning including multiplication bonds, and fractions alongside other concepts. 

You'll leave this session more confident at making links between manipulatives and the mathematical ideas they represent.  

This session will include: 

  • Research and theory on deepening understanding of the use of manipulatives
  • Activities, games and use of manipulatives to develop deep conceptual understanding of the structures in maths across all Key Stages, which can be used with children as a whole class or in small groups. 
  • Discussion of how manipulatives and representations help develop oracy in the classroom and promote reasoning and discussion. 

Suitable for: teachers and teaching assistants (KS1-3)

I have been an Independent Maths Consultant for 15 years working mainly in Primary schools. I work as a Lead Trainer for the Every Child Counts maths interventions, an Evidence Advocate for the research schools, a maths researcher and Lead Trainer for the University of Oxford, a facilitator for the NPQ in Leading Primary Maths and as a work group lead and School Development lead for maths hubs. 

I also support schools by delivering research-based PD, planning with teachers, developing subject knowledge and models of interaction with TAs and supporting Maths subject leads in implementing effective change across schools.  

My passion is the use of manipulatives to support deep, conceptual understanding and creating a love of maths in schools.
