Understanding and navigating the new Ofsted framework

As the latest Ofsted framework enters its first full academic year, this webinar provides a vital opportunity to explore the drivers behind the new approach as well as a chance to consider the implications for members who find themselves in, or approaching, the Ofsted ‘window’.

In this thought-provoking session, Professor Tony Breslin, lead author of the NEU’s guidance on the framework, explores how leaders and practitioners across the schools’ workforce might navigate their way through the new arrangements. Drawing on his experience, his professional expertise and his extensive work as a teacher, leader, researcher and policy and practice adviser, he will outline:

  • The nature of the new report card, the multiple evaluation areas that it draws on, and the new Ofsted grades.
  • The content of the new toolkits and operating guides that detail what inspectors will focus on and how they should conduct themselves during inspections.
  • The implications of the new focus on inclusion and how this appears to be playing out, especially in those schools where the inclusion challenge is at its greatest.
  • The switch from ‘leadership and management’ under previous frameworks to ‘leadership and governance’ under the new one, and the opportunities and pitfalls that this opens up.
  • The likely effect of what remains a high-stakes approach to school accountability on staff wellbeing and the practical steps that might be taken to mitigate some of its impact.
