Supporting pupils experiencing stress and anxiety

It is well established that anxiety can significantly affect pupils’ ability to engage, learn, and thrive in the classroom. This session will provide you with a deeper understanding of stress and anxiety, and look at the behavioural, cognitive, psychological and physical impact.

It will look at practical strategies to help pupils manage feelings of anxiety and also look at how schools can help create a safe and supportive environment.

As the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh puts it, ‘When you plant lettuce, if it does not grow well, you don’t blame the lettuce.... ‘rather we look into the reasons it is not doing well. It may need fertilizer, or more water, or less sun’

 At this session you will:

  • Understand interrelated factors that can cause anxiety and how these can impact pupils' thoughts, feelings, and behaviours
  • Consider practical strategies to support individual pupils experiencing anxiety and stress
  • Learn ways to develop a whole-school approach that reduces anxiety
