Secondary: Speech, language and social, emotional and mental health

Many young people with behaviour challenges or who are at risk of school exclusion also struggle with talking and understanding words. However, particularly at secondary age, speech and language challenges are often misidentified or misunderstood. This session will cover the relationship between speech and language challenges and social, emotional and mental health. We will explore possible indicators of speech and language challenges and tools that can support with identification. Finally, we’ll cover support for pupils in the secondary school environment. 

 At this session you will: 

  • Learn about the relationship between speech and language challenges and social, emotional and mental health
  • Consider the potential impacts of challenges with talking and understanding words on behaviour
  • Explore some tools to identify speech and language challenges
  • Learn some universal approaches for supporting all pupils
  • Have an introduction to some targeted approaches for pupils with speech and language challenges
