Scaffolding and adaptive teaching: support staff

This session offers lots of practical ways to support learners 1:1 and in small groups, using inclusive approaches to meet a range of needs.

In this session, Sue Cowley will share plenty of practical ways in which classroom facing support staff can adapt their approaches to better support learners, when working 1 to 1 and with small groups. She will look at the range of differences and needs which can affect how children learn and develop, discussing the implications of these for approaches to teaching and learning. Sue will explore the most common barriers to learning and how these can be overcome. She will give advice on the full range of scaffolds that can be put in place to help learners build knowledge, understand concepts and develop their skills. She will also share some specific strategies to help you support learners who have autism and ADHD.

This will be a practical, interactive and engaging session with plenty of real-life examples from different phases.

At this session you will:

  • Understand more about barriers to learning and how/why these can ‘block’ progress
  • Learn about how conceptual understanding develops and how to support this process
  • Gain knowledge of a range of potential scaffolds and how/why to use them
  • Build a bank of strategies for supporting learners with SEND
