Developing middle leaders

Held in association with the IoE.

This is an online leadership development programme designed for those in middle leadership roles. It is run in four parts online as a group with individual inter session tasks across the programme.

This programme is suitable for you if you are currently a middle leader with some experience of the role. You will be responsible for leading/managing a team of staff e.g. head of subject, head of year, head of faculty, head of house or cross-curricular teams in any phase. This programme is also suitable for professional support staff who have been leading a team of administrators or teaching assistants.

This programme is run in partnership by tutors from UCL Centre for Educational Leadership.

Programme Overview

The programme is designed to deepen your understanding of your role in leading learning in an education environment. It blends leadership theories and research with practical application, increasing your ability to lead, manage and develop people in your team and develop your confidence and plan for your own personal leadership development.

Throughout the programme participants will develop a ‘Leadership for Change’ enquiry, applying learning directly to your own school setting, to be presented in the final session. A reflective learning journal will support this process along with reflective readings.

Programme aims:

  • Explore morals and values of leadership
  • Understanding the difference of leadership and management
  • Managing difficult conversations
  • Explore leadership styles and motivation
  • Improve your ability to lead, manage and develop people in your team
  • Identify a Leadership for Change enquiry using an appreciative inquiry approach;
  • Ensure you understand that, as a middle leader you are a catalyst for change

Programme Delivery

4 sessions online via zoom and 3 individuals inter session tasks across the programme.

  • Thursday 21st January – Session a) 9.30-11am online, 90 minutes individual study offline, session b) 1.30-3pm - online
  • Thursday 11th February – 4-5.30pm - online
  • Thursday 11th March 4-5.30pm - online
  • Thursday 20th May 9.30am-12.20pm - online
