The Union is pleased to offer places to members for a delegation to Bosnia, in the summer half-term. The proposed dates are Tuesday 1 June – Saturday 5 June 2027, subject to flight availability.
The visit is in commemoration of the Srebrenica genocide that took place in July 1995. The delegation will visit Sarajevo, Tuzla and Srebrenica.
Delegates will visit the site of the genocide, attend memorial ceremonies, and meet with survivors and organisers of memorial organisations and charities.
About the delegation
The NEU has a longstanding partnership with Remembering Srebrenica, a UK charity that commemorates the Srebrenica genocide and provides education resources for schools.
In 2025, to mark the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, the NEU sent two delegations to Bosnia. Since then, the political situation in the country has further deteriorated, with rising ethnonationalism, genocide denial and renewed challenges to the country's democratic institutions. These developments make continued international engagement and education about the events of Srebrenica and the consequences of division and conflict more important than ever.
Prospective delegates should note that the programme includes early starts, long days and significant road travel. Due to the political situation in Bosnia, elements of the programme may need to change at very short notice, and access to certain areas may be restricted.

Members can be nominated with the support of their Districts by using the application form here [link].
The form must be signed by the member’s District Secretary. Signatures can be electronic and their veracity confirmed by email.
The application form requires the applicant to complete a statement outlining their experience of international solidarity work, knowledge of the Srebrenica genocide, understanding of the current situation in Bosnia, and pledged solidarity activities upon return.
Please note, applications made by individuals without the approval of their District will not be accepted.
Criteria for eligibility
The National Education Union Executive has determined that the following factors will be considered when selecting participants for delegations:
- Ensuring a balance across regions and nations;
- Ensuring a gender balance;
- Ensuring representation from the diversity of our membership;
- Minimum of 6 months remaining on passport from end of delegation date;
- Prioritisation for activists who have not been on a union delegation overseas in the last three years to afford opportunities for new activists; and
- Prioritisation of activists who have made clear pledges during the nomination process on how they will use their experience to engage new members into activism through international solidarity.
