NEU National CPD

Behaviour: building a consistent approach

In this session, Sue Cowley will share lots of practical advice on building a consistent approach to behaviour in both your classroom and your school. She will explore why consistency is so important and why it can be difficult to achieve. She will look at how stability and predictability support all learners to behave, especially those who have SEND.

Sue will examine both whole school consistency and individual consistency, looking at how we can be more aware of our reactions to the behaviour of individual learners. She will give advice on reframing our responses in order to support all learners to develop their self-regulation skills. She will explore how ‘flexible consistency’ allows us to adapt our approaches to behaviour, making reasonable adjustments to ensure inclusion, while maintaining high expectations for everyone in our classrooms.

This will be a practical, interactive and engaging session with lots of real-life examples from early years, primary and secondary classrooms and post compulsory settings.

Learning outcomes:

  • Reflect on the importance of consistent approaches and how to develop these
  • Understand how to change mindsets and reframe responses to individual learners
  • Learn what ‘flexible consistency’ is and why it is so important for inclusion
  • Explore flexible responses to common classroom scenarios

Suitable for all members, including non-member ECTs, trainees and students.
