Windrush Lessons Learned Review

In 2022, Wendy Williams reported on her return to the Home Office to assess what progress had been made against her excellent review in 2020 of the Windrush scandal. Her recommendations fell under three main areas:

The department should acknowledge the wrong which was done; it should open itself up to greater external scrutiny; and it should recognise that migration and wider Home Office policy is about people and, whatever its objective, should be rooted in humanity.

She found that while some progress had been made there were ‘many examples where the department has not made progress at the pace it envisaged, or in some cases at all.

The recommendations relating to external insight and scrutiny arrangements, namely the Migrants’ Commissioner (Recommendation 9), the review of the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration (ICIBI) (Recommendation 10) and the Independent Case Examiner (Recommendation 20), are all currently unmet.

The NEU is calling for the Home Office to expedite the recommendations of the Windrush Lessons Learned Review and especially to ensure full and swift compensation for all those affected.
