This framework can be used by:
- school leaders
- school governors
- staff
- union reps
Schools must be at the forefront of transforming education to address the challenges of the climate crisis. Faced with extreme temperatures, floods and threats to our established way of life, we must contribute to creating a fairer and greener society for everyone.
For schools, a just transition means transforming education to build a resilient and fair future by:
- adapting to a low carbon economy by teaching sustainability
- protecting against climate impacts (for example, heatwaves and flooding)
- improving energy efficiency
- ensuring all staff and students, particularly those from vulnerable groups benefit fairly from green initiatives.
This framework sets out three key areas to support schools in this transition.
Leadership
A strategic commitment to sustainability and real zero aspirations – at all levels of school leadership – is critical for success.
Workplace
It is vital to create an environment where staff feel valued and supported during the transition, with commitments to help staff enhance existing skills and develop new ones. This could include embedding sustainability into their teaching – whatever their subject specialism – and developing expertise to help students benefit from opportunities in the developing green economy.
Impact and opportunities
A just transition should be seen as an opportunity where the potential benefits will outweigh any investment costs, and these can be best achieved through a trusted partnership approach.
