Working with children and young people who have Down's syndrome

Every learner who has Down’s syndrome is unique. Individuals differ across all aspects of social and cognitive development as well as in their family support and educational opportunities. Every individual can be helped by skilled educators who understand the needs and strengths of learners. This session is for any educator working with learners who have Down’s Syndrome.

In this session you will:

  • Gain insights into learning strengths and relative challenges, including working memory and cognition
  • Recognise that teaching and learning approaches should be tailored to needs – at individual, group and whole class level
  • Gain confidence and understanding about how to make adaptations
  • Appreciate the importance of communication and language skills which underpin learning and development.

Suitable for: Teachers, support staff and supply in primary and secondary
