Scaffolding understanding in the primary classroom: whole class, group and individual strategies

This session will help children access what’s being taught, respond successfully to questions, and engage with learning at every stage.

Many children struggle to understand spoken language in the classroom - and without the right support, this can affect their learning, participation, confidence, and wellbeing. As educators, you play a crucial role in helping all children access what’s being taught, respond successfully to questions, and engage with learning at every stage. This session will introduce you to a range of strategies for scaffolding children’s understanding in whole-class teaching, small groups, and one-to-one interactions.

At this session you will:

  • Learn about the impact of speech and language challenges – including how struggling to understand language can affect children’s behaviour, learning, and wellbeing.
  • Explore whole-class, group and individual strategies for scaffolding children’s understanding – therefore supporting their learning, participation and wellbeing.
  • Be introduced to approaches such as Blank’s Levels of Questioning and Colourful Semantics, and consider how they could be applied practically in the classroom.

Suitable for: teachers, SENDCos, classroom facing support staff, and anyone looking to strengthen inclusive practice and improve access to learning for all children.
