Remembering Srebrenica

11 July marks the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, when over 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered in what the UN has described as the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War.

This year, the NEU has stepped up its education work in schools and its support for education charity Remembering Srebrenica UK, a charitable initiative supported by successive UK governments to raise awareness of the genocide and to pay tribute to both those who died as well as their loved ones. It also works to bring people together to tackle hatred today and help build safer and stronger communities in the UK.

Schools have always been at the centre of Remembering Srebrenica’s work, with over 200,000 young people educated since 2013 on the lessons from Srebrenica and the importance of standing up to hatred and intolerance wherever they appear.

How your school can help

Remembering Srebrenica has a range of education resources available for the teaching and commemoration of what happened in Srebrenica, about the wider genocide that took place in Bosnia in the 1990s, and about their relevance to today. They can be found both on the charity’s website and TES; a summary is included below.

If your school can participate in or organise a memorial activity locally, please email: [email protected] so they can record and publicise your contributions.

Remembering Srebrenica art competition

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, the NEU is running an art competition for schools. We are asking schools to produce artwork based on the Srebrenica Flower and for students to write their messages of peace and hope for the future.

Please send all entries to Celia Dignan, Hamilton House, Mabledon Place, WC1H 9BD by 4th July.  Successful entries will be displayed at our Remembering Srebrenica Commemoration Event on 10th July.

Download the flyer for more details.

Students attending memorial events with their families

Britain today is home to several thousand Bosnian families, most of whom came to this country during the 1990s war. The charity asks schools to be sensitive to the fact that Bosnian and other families may wish to attend commemoration events in June or July.
