Save education

Snap poll

The STRB report and the Government's response were published on 1 July. The NEU has responded to the Government's proposal of a 3.5% teacher pay increase in September 2026, followed by a 3% increase in September 2027.

Your executive’s decision to ballot members on industrial action was rooted in the belief that every child deserves a properly funded education, and every educator deserves the resources and conditions needed to provide that for our young people and our communities.

So, now we need you – teachers in maintained schools in England – to have your say, via a snap poll, on the pay offer of 3.5 per cent this year and 3 per cent next year, with at least 1.1 per cent of this having to be funded from your school’s budget.

Eligible members should have received an email and a text message with a link to the online snap poll. The poll asks you to answer four questions to inform your union's next steps. It is vitally important that we hear from as many members as possible.

The poll will close at 4pm on Friday, 17 July, so you must vote before then to make your voice heard.

No profession, no sector – no matter how dedicated or resilient its workforce – can indefinitely compensate for political choices that result in systematic, long-term underfunding.

Let us make no mistake: we are now at a crunch point. Because if we don’t act to save education, who will?

Formal postal ballot for strike action

The national executive has decided that a formal ballot of teacher  and support staff members will open on 3 October and close on 15 December

Reports indicate that any pay rise for teachers will be below inflation and not fully funded.

The 3.3 per cent increase announced for school support staff is also well below the claim submitted by sister unions and unfunded.

This lack of funding will force heads into making even more cuts. The only way to improve things is if we work together, stand up collectively and show this government we won't sit back while our schools are starved of the funds they need.

If the government does not take urgent action to save education, we must act. So, we are asking you to get ready:

  • Make sure all your contact details are up to date by visiting MyNEU.
  • Talk to your colleagues at school and make sure they have saved the date.
  • Get in touch with your NEU rep or branch secretary and find out more.

The government must step up and deliver the properly funded education system our children and young people deserve. Read the key issues in this campaign
