Raising hope for children in crisis

NEU fundraising appeal with Save the Children UK, to support children in the world’s toughest places.

Right now, 1 in 11 children globally need lifesaving humanitarian assistance. The NEU is working with Save the Children to stand with children in the world's toughest places.

The NEU has a long tradition of international solidarity especially in supporting children in crisis contexts. To mark World Children’s Day, we have launched a new fundraising appeal to support the Save the Children Emergency Fund and help reach children with lifesaving food, healthcare, education and protection in places like Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine.

Support the Save the Children Emergency Fund

As disasters became more frequent and severe, more children than ever before are facing conflict, hunger and climate disasters. At the same time, cuts in foreign aid are stopping vital work when children’s needs have never been greater.

When crisis hits Save the Children are always among the first organisations to respond. Its Emergency Fund enables the organisation to respond within hours of a sudden disaster and ongoing humanitarian crises.

Crucially, as a flexible fund it means Save the Children can provide rapid, life-saving action whenever and wherever crises strike, including those that don't make the headlines. The Fund also supports anticipatory action and emergency preparedness to act ahead of disasters to save lives and reduce impact.

How you can help Save the Children reach children in crisis:

Running the appeal in your school is a great way to combine learning with fun, raising money while teaching about the lives of children around the world.

There are plenty of exciting ways for schools to get involved, consider what best fits your school.

Christmas Jumper Day is a fun way to spread the festive spirit whilst raising funds for children around the world. It is one of Save the Children's biggest annual fundraising events – raising over £40 million since 2012!

This year’s Christmas Jumper Day is on 11th December, but you can celebrate it on another day if this date doesn’t work for your school.

Offer creative, inclusive alternatives so that all children can take part. For example, provide plain T-shirts and materials to decorate instead of requiring Christmas jumpers to be worn, and encourage the use of accessories and upcycling rather than purchasing new jumpers.

Our fundraising poster includes all the information about Christmas Jumper Day and how funds raised will support children caught up in armed conflicts and disasters.

Put it up in your classroom and staffroom to let everyone know about the day and encourage them to scan the QR code to donate directly to the appeal.

Throw on your aprons and get baking to help change lives. Bake sales are a great way to celebrate international food traditions among the families in your school as well as raising funds for children around the world.

Keep the focus on inclusion by asking people to make a donation rather than charging a set amount and remember to list all ingredients and potential allergens alongside each bake.

International Day of Education shines a light on the millions of children who are denied an education, while also celebrating the role of education for peace and development.

Conflict, climate change and displacement increasingly disrupt and deny children access to a quality education. International Day of Education is an opportunity to bring the appeal to life in your classroom and support children to learn about the barriers their peers face in accessing the education that every child deserves and needs.

Save the Children have lots of brilliant volunteer speakers who would love to come and speak to your students about their work and how the funds they raise will support children around the world – consider inviting them to an assembly.
