NEU National CPD

Teaching art confidently in primary

This session explores how we can teach art in ways that build confidence—for both educators and pupils—by focusing on process over outcome, and creating space for curiosity, exploration and critical thinking.

Drawing on work across schools, consultancy and the cultural sector, the session will share simple, adaptable approaches that support high-quality art experiences without adding pressure or complexity.

This session will cover:

• How to create a classroom culture where all pupils feel confident to take creative risks

• The role of technique and knowledge—without losing the joy of making

• Using talk and questioning to deepen thinking in art

• Practical strategies to move away from ‘right answers’ and towards meaningful outcomes

• Simple, low-resource activities you can take straight back to your classroom

Suitable for: Primary teachers, teaching assistants, subject leaders and supply teachers
