NEU National CPD

Spotting the signs of dyslexia in secondary school

This session will equip secondary school staff with the knowledge and confidence to recognise signs of dyslexia in older learners, understand the underlying difficulties behind observable behaviours, and apply simple classroom strategies that support learners without generating additional workload. The session also covers how to appropriately escalate concerns—especially when you teach a student only once or twice a week.

 This session will help you:

  • Identify key signs of dyslexia in secondary learners, focusing on reading behaviours
  • Link observable behaviours to underlying processing difficulties to better understand learner needs
  • Apply simple, low‑effort classroom strategies that support dyslexic learners without creating extra workload
  • Recognise when and how to seek additional support, even when you teach the learner infrequently
  • Build confidence in making informed, empathetic adjustments that benefit all students

Suitable for: All members
