DENI also confirm that they have received the teacher unions’ pay claim for 2021/22 and is under consideration.

Normally, when a pay award agreement is outstanding, the pay remit for that group of staff cannot be approved by the department and the department of finance.

However, where there is a contractual right to incremental progression on a specific date, and where this date falls before the settlement of any relevant pay negotiations, public sector pay policy allows for the temporary approval of incremental progression.

Incremental progression for eligible teachers, which is due from 1 September 2021, can be processed and paid on time.

The department is now processing this pay increase and intends that the increments for teachers in controlled, maintained and grant maintained integrated sector schools will be included in pay for work carried out in September 2021.

DENI have also advised voluntary grammar schools to make arrangements now to ensure that the incremental progression payments to eligible teachers in their schools are also put into payment, effective from 1 September 2021

Any teacher member with any concerns should contact the NEU Northern Ireland office.
