Proposed increases in the employer contribution to the Teachers' Pension Scheme (TPS) could lead to some employers withdrawing from the scheme, with members taking a significant hit to their pension.
A new Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) was introduced in 2014. From April of that year, all members are in the new scheme, and accrued benefits from that time forward on a career average basis. This factsheet gives an overview of the LGPS, including those changes.
The Court of Appeal has ruled against the Government, following decisions in the Employment Tribunal and Employment Appeals Tribunal. The NEU sees no need to take legal action at this point. If the Government loses in the Supreme Court then whatever compensation is deemed payable will be applied automatically to the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (E&W).
