NEU raised concerns through NI Teachers Council on behalf of substitute teachers who have been unable to access secure work as schools are closed to pupils except for vulnerable children and those of key workers. Department of Education NI has now introduced a scheme to help support substitute teachers during the current six-week period of school closures.

You can apply if you:

  • have worked as a substitute teacher in Northern Ireland in September, October, November or December 2020
  • have lost the opportunity for income as a substitute teacher in Northern Ireland through the current 6-week period of school closures due to COVID-19
  • are available to work as a substitute teacher, if required, in January and February 2021.  (If you are unavailable to work as a result of following PHA advice, you may still apply to the scheme).

Payment will be calculated based on 80% of the average days / hours you worked during the period 1 September to 31 December 2020.  Payments will be processed through the payroll system for substitute teachers, with the normal tax, national insurance and pension contributions deducted.

Actual days / hours worked, or booked to work, during the period 1 January to 14 February 2021, will be offset against any claim for days / hours through the scheme.

If you meet the eligibility criteria detailed above, you should complete and submit your application before 5.00pm on Friday 29 January 2021.
