Refugee Week

Education as sanctuary, community as superpower

Published:

The National Education Union (NEU) marks Refugee Week 2025 by reaffirming our commitment to the dignity, rights, and safety of refugees and asylum seekers, and to the power of education as a space of welcome and solidarity.

This year’s theme, Community as a Superpower, is a bold call to action: to support and stand together. In the face of rising racism, the growing influence of the far right, and the targeting of refugees, we see classrooms as important places for creating empathy and understanding.

Daniel Kebede, General Secretary of the NEU, said:

"Refugee Week is a moment for reflection, but also a call to action.

‘In classrooms across the country, teachers work with families - supporting refugee children and they see their resourcefulness. At a time when racism and far-right politics are on the rise, we must be clear: the ways that politicians talk about race and about migration have immediate consequences for children and young people. The NEU stands firmly against the scapegoating of refugees and with those seeking dignity and a safe future."

‘Our schools must remain sanctuaries, where positive values are taught. Politicians should recognise their responsibility to unite communities and must stop scapegoating refugees. We want  all children - no matter their background – to be safe, supported, and able to thrive.’’
