Problems with behaviour in school

87% of NEU Cymru members identify problems with behaviour in school

A recent survey of NEU Cymru members found that 87% identified that there is a problem with pupil behaviour and the way that behaviour is dealt with in schools in Wales.

Speaking ahead of the Senedd debate on pupil behaviour today, Nicola Fitzpatrick, Interim Wales Secretary for the National Education Union (NEU) Cymru, said:

"Lack of funding is a key issue here. Our members are really clear that when it comes to pupil behaviour, schools can't tackle this by themselves. They need access to support services, more support for children with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) and more support from local authorities.

"It is welcome that the Senedd is having this debate today, but it is sad that it has taken such a high-profile incident to bring behaviour to the top of the political agenda in Wales.

"We welcome that the Welsh Government recognises schools alone can't solve the range of challenges faced by children. But it’s clear that funding is going to be key to helping schools with this. We look forward to working with the Welsh Government on this critical issue and sharing our members' concerns and needs with them at the upcoming Behaviour Summit."
